JUNIOR

Grade 5 Muheim student Emily Hobley McCosker was the winner of the junior category with her entry suggesting a ‘voluntary humanitarian tax’ allowing Canadians to donate to the Red Cross or other charities through their Income Tax Return forms.

SENIOR

Grade 10 Bulkley Valley Christian School student Justin Steenhof took the senior prize with a proposal for mandatory helmet use on ski and snowboard hills. The bill would create a tax incentive for ski hills that implement mandatory helmet policies.

Grade 7 Muheim student Luke Santerno captured the junior category title (Grades 5-8) for his entry suggesting federal funds help build bike lanes across Canada.

SENIOR

In the senior category (Grades 9-12), Smithers Secondary Grade 10 students Hayley McDermid, Claire Hinchliffe and Chloe Staiger teamed up to propose a ban on asbestos exports from Canada.

OTHER RIDINGS (2009-2010)

The Create Your Canada Contest has been spreading across the country. In 2009-2010, three other ridings announced winners

Vancouver Kingsway: A winning entry from grade 12 student Puneet Riar would commit Canada to contributing 0.7% of our Gross National Product to foreign aid as we agreed to at the UN in 1970. A second winner is Hansel Fung, a grade 10 student that proposed tax credits for Canadians buying high energy efficiency appliances to reduce their environmental impact. Winnipeg Centre: Winner Samuel Unrau submitted a proposal to improve accessibility of transportation in Canada, so people of all levels of physical ability can travel with more dignity. MP Pat Martin introduced the bill on June 2, 2010. Read more about the bill .

Victoria: Grade 10 student Thea Block submitted a winning bill idea to move from open net fish farms to closed containment systems that will protect wild salmon stocks in B.C. Her MP Denise Savoie seconded the bill which was introduced by Fisheries Critic Fin Donnelly on May 5, 2010. Read more about the bill

London – Fanshawe: Students Hannah Deboer and Miranda Van Looyen submitted a plan to stop using single use non-biodegradable bags in Canada. They propose that we could reduce harm to animals, keep pollution out of our environment, and reduce the use of non-renewable oil resources. Read more about the bill
